"My favorite smell is the first smell of spring in New York," Andy Warhol once said.
Warhol began painting and silk-screening colored flowers during the 1960s, and returned to the subject in 1970, when he developed a portfolio of vibrantly colored flower screenprints at the first of his two studios on Union Square.
Both the flowers and the location were the inspiration for Andy Warhol Union Square, the latest in Bond No. 9's series of limited edition collectible Warhol perfume ($195 for 100ml; $135 for 50ml).
"Working with Bond No. 9 represents a unique, unexpected, and exciting opportunity to introduce Warhol to an ever-widening audience," said Michael Hermann, director of licensing at The Andy Warhol Foundation.
The connection between the Warhol Foundation and Bond No. 9 is New York. If Andy Warhol was a mirror of his time, he also reflected the vitality and creativity of his adopted city.
Marking the junction of Broadway and Park Avenue South between 14th and 17th streets, Union Square and the park within it have a storied history as a choice location for outdoor public gatherings-notably union rallies in the early 20th century.

When Jacqueline Savage McFee, a designer of popular, trendy school and office products splashed in luscious color, got the devastating news that her cousin's young daughter, Kendall Sierens, was diagnosed with leukemia, it brought things into perspective for her. It also created a spark.
McFee went to business partner Clay Presley, president and CEO, Carolina Pad & Paper (CPP), with the idea of dedicating one of the company's 2008 fashion collections in honor of the little girl, now 4, who is successfully battling this deadly disease. The result: The Kendall Kollection, a hip line of school and office products that will be available in stores this spring.
Further, she determined to partner with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) to help launch the line (notebooks, folders, binders, pencils and other supplies), donating 10 percent of proceeds from the products to support LLS's blood cancer research and patient education and support services. CPP will also make a contribution to LLS.
Leukemia causes more deaths of children and young adults under the age of 20 than any other form of cancer. Aiming to create significant visibility for this deadly disease, the partnership between LLS, McFee and CPP is a perfect match. The Kendall Kollection appeals to the key target audience of young school-age girls as well as women interested in more upscale, creative office supplies.

Turnover rose by 7.3 million euros from 123.0 million euros at the end of 2006 to 130.3 million euros at the end of 2007, an increase of 5.9%. PrimaDonna again posted the strongest growth (+7.9%) and now accounts for 45% of total turnover.
Turnover outside the euro zone grew 21.8%. The euro zone does however continue to be the strongest market, accounting for 76% of total turnover. Operational cash flow (EBITDA) was 44.6 million euros (+8.5%), a rise due to a better gross margin and good cost management.
The gross margin rose slightly due to an improved write-down of stocks against turnover. Those write-downs had increased sharply in recent years as a consequence of a broader collection and a conscious increase in stock positions. Investments to improve demand forecasting have reversed this trend.
Sales costs rose less strongly than turnover. The sales-support services continued to be rolled out in 2007. Extra resources were channelled to the PrimaDonna Styling and Marie Jo Styling programme in particular, which was introduced among more than 400 customers in our core markets. The aim of the programme is to increase the competitiveness of specialist stores by emphasising the effect lingerie has on a woman’s body.
Lastly, the sales costs of retail activities fell in 2007 due to the closure of two less profitable stores. The rise in operational profit (EBIT) (+7.4%) was slightly lower than the EBITDA growth, as a consequence of the reversal of a provision for a claim filed by a former Italian distributor.

The Hong Kong International Fur & Fashion Fair, to be held from February 25-28 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), is again the focus of industry players looking for the latest upbeat fur creations.
Organized by the Hong Kong Fur Federation, this annual event will showcase a kaleidoscope of fur apparel, accessories and lifestyle furnishings from 245 local and overseas exhibitors to hail from 18 countries and regions.
Modish design and new technology employed in fur products have prompted the popularity of fur to go in step with prevailing fashion. The last 10 years has seen the sale of furs explode around the world with more people buying, wearing and otherwise using fur than ever before.
Indeed, fur has become a favourite amongst global fashion goers. “Acclaimed international fashion designers continue to embrace fur as it increases both their prestige and profitability.
With a substantial fur content jazzing up fashion catwalks in Paris, Milan and New York, their endorsement will ensure high visibility for furs throughout the year,” said Mr. Timothy Everest, spokesman of the Hong Kong Fur Federation.
Hong Kong is the fur manufacturing powerhouse of the world where buyers can rely on to purchase responsible, fashionable furs at fair prices. In the last seven years, Hong Kong’s total exports of fur clothing has kept growing, recording an accumulative increase of 38% from 2001-2007.
Affected by thewarm winter in 2006, Hong Kong fur exports slowed down in 2007 with value worth at HK$2.5 billion, while Finland, Kazakhstan, and Poland recorded impressive growth.
Mr. Everest noted that the outlook of Hong Kong fur exports in 2008 will inevitably be affected by the sub-prime chaos in developed economies in Europe and America, however there are encouraging demands from China and Russia attributed to their cold winter and affluent economy.

Last year’s finalists included Fashion Design alumnae Dominique Asuncion ’07, Pam Martin ’07 and winner Alison Winters ’07, who secured first place with her creative and marketable “skater girl” collection.
Like Winters, the winner of this year’s Runway Challenge will receive an all-expense-paid trip to that international fashion hot spot, Paris, France.

Charles & Colvard Ltd, the global source of moissanite, a created jewel available for use in fine jewelry reported fourth quarter and 2007 operating results.
For the three months ended December 31, 2007, net sales decreased 35% to $7.9 million as compared to $12.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2006. Gross profit decreased 42% to $5.4 million compared to $9.3 million in the prior year period. Gross profit margins decreased 830 basis points to 68.6% in the fourth quarter of 2007 from 76.9% in the comparable quarter of 2006 primarily as a result of higher production costs during the period being relieved from inventory.
The Company had an operating loss for the three months ended December 31, 2007 of $1.7 million compared to an operating profit of $1.9 million in the same period in 2006. The decline in operating results was primarily attributable to lower sales, which resulted in Marketing and Sales expense being 62% of Net sales in the fourth quarter of 2007 as compared to 52% in the same quarter of 2006, and a $1.1 million increase in General and Administrative expense resulting from a $1.1 million increase in bad debt expense.
The Company committed to substantially all of its marketing and sales expenses prior to the commencement of the fourth quarter and could not adjust its spending as sales growth did not materialize. The increase in bad debt expense is a result of a reserve recorded for customers with significantly past due accounts, JewelNet Corporation d/b/a K&G Creations and Reeves Park. K&G accounted for 5% and 11% of sales during the fourth quarter of 2007 and fiscal 2007, respectively, and the Company is in the process of winding up its relationship with this customer and assisting its retailers in obtaining new manufacturing vendors.
Reeves Park accounted for 14% and 20% of sales during the fourth quarter of 2007 and fiscal 2007, respectively. The Company and Reeves Park are negotiating to bring this account current.
The Company incurred a net loss for the fourth quarter 2007 of $1.1 million, or $0.06 per diluted share as compared to net income of $1.3 million, or $0.07 per diluted share in the fourth quarter of 2006.

Noni B Limited announced an after-tax profit of $5.7 million for the half year to 30 December 2007, compared with $6.1 million for the previous corresponding period. Profit after tax from the company's Noni B stores was approximately 2 per cent higher than the previous corresponding period, with its La Voca stores, which are at an early stage of development, recording an after-tax loss of $0.8 million. The company's market share continued to grow, with sales rising by 5.8 per cent to $69.7 million.
Reflecting the directors' confidence in the company's prospects, the interim dividend has been increased to 10.0 cents per share fully franked (FY 2007: 9.0 cents), payable on 28 April 2008 to shareholders on the register at 14 April 2008.
Mr. Alan Kindl, managing director of Noni B, said: 'The increased profit from our Noni B stores is encouraging at a time when demand for women's fashion in regional New South Wales is still depressed by the lingering impact of the drought and the South Australian economy is flat. Sales have been particularly strong in Western Australia, Queensland and Northern Territory, helped by strong local economic conditions.
'We continued to expand Noni B's national coverage, opening eight new stores and closing two stores that were underperforming. We also invested $1.2 million in refurbishing nine existing stores and plan to refurbish a further 19 stores and open three new Noni B stores in the second half.
'While the loss by our La Voca stores is disappointing, we have always regarded La Voca as a long-term growth strategy which would take up to three years to make a significant earnings contribution. The concept has been fine-tuned in the light of our experience over the past 18 months and marketing expenditure has been boosted; and, with a dedicated team now driving the business, we are increasingly positive about its prospects during the coming winter season and beyond. Four new La Voca stores were opened during the half year, bringing the total to 19, and we expect to open further stores during 2008.

In quantitative terms, the country with the most significant levels of shoe production in Europe is still, as ever, Italy. Over the last ten years the structure of the Italian shoe industry has scarcely altered: small and medium-sized producers are in the majority.
Over this period, however, the number of operating businesses has shrunk from 8,500 to 6,657, and the number of employees has decreased by 28,000 to 94,143 at the end of 2006. The high proportion of small businesses makes research and marketing investments more difficult.
For this reason the shoe manufacturers association ANCI, with the support of the foreign trade institute Instituto Nazionale per il Commercio Estero (ICE), is planning a joint marketing initiative abroad.
The aim, under the trademark slogan “I love Italian shoes” - to which 150 manufacturers have already signed up - is to develop a chain of stores.
In March 2007 the first of these multi-brand retail outlets opened with a trading area of 280 sq. metres in the Russian city of Omsk.
From 2008, as promised by the minister for foreign trade Emma Bonino, the ICE will include the shoe sector more strongly in its 100 million euro promotion programme.
Italian shoe exports to Germany, its most important foreign sales market, decreased again in 2006, with sales value sinking by 1.6% and shoe quantities by 11.5%.

The main rule for shoe trends next Autumn/Winter is as follows: sportiness remains a key theme but will be translated into clearly more chic, well-groomed and at times even elegant styles next season.
Altogether the new shoe fashion is modern, unpretentious and self-confident. Sophistication is ensured by clear, at times very purist lines and an enormously wide variety of lasts, on the one hand, and by the mix of natural and man-made materials plus matt/shine contrasts, on the other.
Styles and shoe types: Last season’s favourites – all manner of high-legged boots – remain in pole position but will increasingly compete with bootees and ankle boots.
Causing a stir here will be new, more feminine boots with platform soles and chunky heels as well as those featuring novel more delicate and sometimes very high heels. Becoming even more important next Autumn/Winter will be court shoes/pumps.
Styles range from almost ‘architectural’ types with a purist attitude and feminine pumps with wide clasps and details stressing the ankle to high-upper styles somewhere between court shoes and ankle boots.
Ballerinas will stand their ground on new, tiny heels set back under the sole. Pointed lasts will be revisited offering plenty of creative scope for new bootees, ankle-high boots and delicate laced boots.
Even masculine Oxfords, so-called Dandy shoes, are heralding a comeback. Smooth, clean finishes will be just as much in evidence as typically male styles such as brogues and wing tips.

J. C. Penney Company Inc reported operating income of $729 million and earnings from continuing operations of $1.93 per share for the fourth quarter of 2007. Operating income as a percent of sales increased slightly in the quarter, although on a dollar basis it declined compared to last year's 14-week fourth quarter.
For the quarter, the impact of gross margin pressure resulting from a weak consumer spending environment was more than offset by effective control of operating expenses. For the full year, operating income was $1,888 million, or 9.5 per cent of sales, and earnings from continuing operations were $4.90 per share. Net income for this year's fourth quarter and full year, including the impact of discontinued operations, was $1.93 and $4.93 per share, respectively.
"I am proud of what our team accomplished in 2007," said Myron E. (Mike) Ullman III, chairman and chief executive officer of JCPenney. "Our ability to manage the business through difficult retail conditions is a tribute to our Associates around the country and validates the Long-Range Plan initiatives we have been implementing to become the retail industry leader in performance and execution.
"With no clear indication that the consumer environment will improve during 2008, we have taken a conservative approach to planning our business to maintain a balance between near-term economic realities and our long-term growth opportunities. To this end, we will remain focused on improvingthe customer experience in our stores and providing exciting, stylish merchandise at smart prices that will resonate well with our customers during this period.
